20 CPD points per year
Nurses need 20 continuing professional development points for each year of licence validity, and the requirement accumulates across a multi-year renewal — a two-year renewal needs 40 points. Collect them steadily; nurses who leave CPD to the final month tend to take whatever activity is available rather than what counts.
The 70/30 split
At least 70 percent of your points must be in your own professional specialty. Up to 30 percent may come from general professional development — communication, quality, patient safety, leadership and similar. A folder full of general courses will not satisfy the requirement no matter how many points it totals.
Medical fitness at 65 and over
A medical fitness certificate is required for licence activation and renewal where the health professional is 65 or older. Build the appointment into the renewal timeline rather than discovering it at submission.
Renewing without stress
A simple routine
- Log each activity in Sheryan as you complete it, with the certificate attached
- Track your specialty versus general split as you go, not at the end
- Start the renewal at least a month before expiry, since verification steps can queue
- Keep a personal copy of every certificate — providers do not always keep records as long as you need them
